KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (July 27, 2011) - The
Chicago White Sox have promoted this year's supplemental first round
draft pick Keenyn Walker to the Kannapolis Intimidators, the White
Sox Class A Affiliate, after beginning his professional career with
the Advanced Rookie Great Falls Voyagers. Walker, the 47th pick in
the 2011 June draft, hit .333 (20-60) with nine RBI in 15 games with
Great Falls in the Pioneer League this year.
Walker, who turns 21 in August, is a switch-hitting outfielder the
White Sox drafted out of Central Arizona College where he hit .412
with six home runs and 59 RBI with an on-base percentage of .509 in
69 games this season. This year he helped Central Arizona reach the
Junior College World Series championship game.
The Salt Lake City native was drafted out of high school by the
Chicago Cubs in the 16th round of the 2009 draft, but he spent the
last two season playing junior college ball. The 6'3", 180-pound
outfielder will join an Intimidators team that has seen a pair of
all-star outfielders - Brady Shoemaker and Trayce Thomspon - take
the field for the team already this season.
In a corresponding move, Intimidators left fielder Brady Shoemaker
will report to Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem. Shoemaker currently
leads the South Atlantic League in hits (119) and games played (99),
he is second in runs scored (68), tied for second in the league with
28 doubles, third in total bases (184), fourth in batting average
(.319, 119-373), and tied for fourth with 65 RBI. He was one of
three All-Stars for Kannapolis this season, his second All-Star
selection.
Kannapolis will also receive infielder Leighton Pangilinan from
Great Falls. The first baseman hit .286 with three home runs and 19
RBI in 29 games with the Voyagers this season. The White Sox
selected Pangilinan in the 40th round of the 2009 June draft, and he
spent the last two years with Advanced Rookie Bristol and Great
Falls.
The Intimidators are back in town for a four-game home stand
beginning Thursday against the Asheville Tourists. Tickets are
available by calling the team box office at (704) 932-3267 or going
online to www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.

First Round Pick Is
Coming To Alaska
The Anchorage Glacier Pilots got some good news Monday afternoon when
general manager Jon Dyson announced that Keenyn Walker, 1st round
pick of the Chicago White Sox, decided to come to Alaska to play the summer
with the Glacier Pilots.
Walker was selected 47th in the first round in the supplemental
draft in early June. He will
bring big numbers with him from Central Arizona College where he led the
team to the National Junior College Tournament.
His 2011 Central Arizona stats are .402 average, 50 RBIs and 65 stolen
bases.
Walker told Dyson that he decided not to sign at this time with the White
Sox and wanted to come north and be in the Tuesday night lineup against the
Mat-Su Miners.
Walker still has until August 15 to sign with the White Sox.
Dyson said, "We feel privileged that Walker, who has been one of our top
prospects since early on, is coming north as he is one of the most talented
players recruited in many years.
He will add a lot of spark to the ball club."

Senator Murkowski’s statement on the passing of Lefty Van Brunt:
“Today, I share the thoughts of Alaska’s entire baseball community in
mourning the passing of Lefty Van Brunt. Lefty blazed a trail in a
league that itself was a sports world pioneer – The Alaska Baseball
League.
“Lefty came to Alaska over a half-century ago and devoted his life to
teaching Alaska’s youth the simple joys of the National Pastime – a
sacrifice bunt, clever defensive fieldwork – and for that we are forever
grateful. He embraced teaching future pros all the way to little
leaguers and always did it with a smile. Baseball in Alaska would not be
where it is today without him.
“I know when the Alaska Baseball League begins again next weekend, Lefty
will be watching from the bleachers of Mulcahy, yelling ‘Play ball!
